Although there has always been LGBT communities across the nation, it was not completely brought into light until the riots at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. This clash between the LGBT community and law enforcement showed the nation the discrimination the community faced and still faces today. This sparked a revolution, leading gays to come forward and fight for equal rights just as any other American citizen. In 1980, more anti-gay attitudes are brought to public attention when gay candidates for mayor in Toronto are defeated. In 1981, Toronto police begin to raid local bath houses, humiliating the gay attendees. In response to the raids, a small bath house in New York called "The Barracks" started making more efforts to make the gay community more aware of issues, how to be prideful, and also to be safer in sexual endeavors. In this same year, many gay men started to get very sick and later die. Many just associated the disease with gay people, but it later was dubbed "AIDS". This outbreak was a catalyst for the fight toward gay rights, considering the outbreak was being overlooked and the government gave little to no assistance in research to keep these men from dying. By 1983, over 1,000 people reported dead due to AIDS. By 1984, discoveries were made and people became more aware of this disease and how it can be spread, making it more than just a "gay issue". By 1990, 8 million people were living with HIV/AIDS. As the history of the disease goes on, the whole issue of the disease itself brought up even bigger social issues to the public. People did not want to be radical, but they had to be radical so that this issue would no longer go unnoticed and gay men would not keep dying for unknown reasons. The fight continues as people are discriminated against in the work place, or even killed for being gay. Not until recently were gays given the right to marriage. Although things have gotten better in recent years, there is still obvious discrimination that needs people to continue to fight for equality until it is finally won.
